We asked a member of our trusted network, Dr. Shashikant Patwardhan, BAM&S, FFAM, this question, and this is what he had to say:
"Ayurveda literally means 'science of life and longevity.' and is considered to be the traditional system of medicine of India. Ayurveda is a science in the sense that it is a complete system. It is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person - body and mind.
Here are some salient points about Ayurveda:
- Ayurveda is an active medicine which teaches you that your role - both actions and behavior - is important than only taking medicine.
- Ayurveda teaches you to respect nature and obey certain natural laws. Simple natural ways and herbs can keep you away from diseases.
- Ayurveda offers specific recommendations to each individual on lifestyle, diet, exercise and yoga, herbal therapy, and even spiritual practices to restore and maintain balance in body and mind.
- Ayurveda teaches you to recognize your self - your constitution, so that you can have the correct food, herbs, and exercises for improving health and preventing diseases."
