Yoga as Medicine Conference

Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Yoga Journal's medical editor Timothy McCall, author of Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing, opened the day with welcome remarks at YJ's one day "Yoga as Medicine" workshop.

Although there have only been a small number of studies and the methodology has room for improvement, yoga's been known to help conditions from MS and cancer to fertility. People have even succeeded in getting their Rheumatoid arthritis into remission from a regular practice.

According to Dr. McCall, practice over a long period of time yields to new neuropathways or patterns. Practicing at home is the key to change. Yoga becomes a new counter habit that competes with older habits. It's our challenge to differentiate when the body says “don't do this" versus the mind. We can be our own self-study. In stages, we see that what we want to do becomes possible. It doesn't take a sweaty session of Sun Salutations and Warriors for yoga to be therapeutic. Yoga consists of so much more than merely asanas.

Pranayama.
Most of the time we breathe through one nostril or the other. But alternate breathing exercises can balance the parasympathetic versus sympathetic nervous system.

Meditation. Breathing through both facilitates a meditative state, which is the true goal of yoga - union with oneself.

Karma. By being of service to others, it is we who actually benefit most.

It's these things done consistently that make a difference and transform people's lives.
