The Power of Yoga as a Doorway for Transformation by Dr. Dean Ornish

Tuesday, 22 January 2008

If you haven't heard about Dr. Dean Ornish and his work in heart disease research and lifestyle modification programs, just think about those salads with fruits and nuts that are now widely available at McDonalds. His work at The Preventive Medical Research Institute has led to healthy food options at fast food franchises, among many other things. Most famous for his Lifestyle Modification Program, Dr. Ornish's research has paved the way for businesses and insurance companies to finally implement behavior modification programs that support changes in diet and lifestyle to cut medical and economic costs. His research shows that heart disease can be reversed with yoga, meditation, walking, and simple diet changes and has been published in numerous medical journals.

At the Yoga Journal conference, he explained that heart disease can be prevented in 95% of all people and be reversed through diet and lifestyle. Incremental change is best when it starts small. Simply walking for twenty minutes every day can make a tremendous difference in overall wellness. And it's not only about what you don't eat, but what you include in your diet as well.

Most importantly, we need to take time to nourish ourselves spiritually. Pain is a messenger that is easily suppressed in our culture. There is an epidemic of loneliness, isolation, and depression that is easily masked by smoking, overeating, overworking, and more. When we develop a simple spiritual practice and slow down to listen to ourselves, we take great steps towards becoming healthy again.
