We asked a member of our trusted network, Dr. Shashikant Patwardhan, BAM&S, FFAM, this question, and this is what he had to say:
"Ayurveda is a deep and pure science derived from nature, which is very well sustained over thousands of years. Most of the herbal medicines are safe and are free from side effects, but some herbals have toxic effects as well. Due to air, water, and soil pollution, safe herbals possibly may turn out to be hazardous.
Ayurvedic practices such as yoga and meditation can be safe ways to promote health. Ayurvedic procedures like Panchakarma for example are very special because they require proper guidance from a trained and skillful Ayurvedic practitioner.
What one should remember is where there are effects, there are side effects too. Ayurvedic herbal medications, like conventional medications, may cause side effects, trigger allergic reactions, or interact with other medications or herbs you are taking. Some Ayurvedic medications, prepared by incompetent pharmacies not following all the ancient methods of preparing these products, may contain high levels of heavy metals, so one should take Ayurvedic treatment under guidance of a Qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner.
It is always better to tell your doctor if you are using a therapy like Ayurveda with your conventional medical treatment."
