Apart from protecting the heart from strokes and attacks, broccoli has now been found to protect human lungs from damage caused by toxins. A compound - sulforapane - found in broccoli increases the activity of the NRF2 gene in smokers with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and protects the lung cells from further damage.
