Stress Overview

Causes

  • The real reason why a human being feels stressed has not yet been determined, however, an imbalance in neurotransmitters such as Norepinephrine and Serotonin are said to be behind stress.
  • Stress is also caused by a complex set of reasons like life style, genetic make up, and body processes.

Symptoms and types

Stress can be emotional or physical. Emotional stress can be due to an impending medical condition or surgery, loss of a loved one or a job, or a permanent or temporary change.

Although symptoms of stress may vary, common symptoms include:

Yoga, Meditation, and the Reduction of Stress

In a pilot study from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, it was found that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which included meditation, yoga, and body scanning exercises, was significantly effective in reducing stress and depression. Fifty participants took part in MBSR and cognitive-behavioral stress reduction (CBSR) course of eight weeks duration.

Can Acupuncture Help Reduce Stress?

According to a pilot study published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, acupuncture may be an effective and an acceptable treatment option for post traumatic stress disorder. Subjects diagnosed with PTSD were randomized to either acupuncture treatment (ACU), a group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or a wait-list control (WLC).
