L-carnitine is an amino acid that is made in the liver and muscles. L-carnitine taken by mouth has been used in patients with hypertriglyceridemia who were receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). However, L-carnitine does not appear to effectively treat hypertriglyceridemia associated with CAPD. Additional study is needed before a firm recommendation can be made.

Avoid with known allergy or hypersensitivity to carnitine. Use cautiously with peripheral vascular disease, high blood pressure, alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis, and diabetes. Use cautiously in low birth weight infants and individuals on hemodialysis. Use cautiously if taking anticoagulants (blood thinners), beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
