Asthma Overview

Background

Asthma is a chronic disease which causes inflammation of the inside walls of the airways making them sensitive to allergens and irritants. When the airways become irritated, they narrow. This narrowing limits the amount of air that flows through to the lung tissue, leading to the common symptoms of asthma.

Causes

There are many different causes for asthma, both genetic and environmental. There is no one reason for the development of asthma. However, if you have asthma, it is important to maintain as healthy of a lifestyle and environment as possible.
