Bromelain is an herb that contains a digestive enzyme that comes from the stem and the fruit of the pineapple plant. When taken with meals, bromelain may aid in the digestion of proteins. When taken on an empty stomach, it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. In one study of a combination product ERC (enzyme-rutosid combination -rutosid, bromelain, trypsin), results showed that ERC may be considered as an effective and safe alternative to prescription anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as diclofenac, in the treatment of painful episodes of osteoarthritis of the knee. Further well-designed clinical trials of bromelain alone are needed to confirm these results    Bromelain has also been suggested as a possible treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Further research is needed before a firm conclusion can be made.   Read more
