Relaxation therapy
: Initial research suggests that relaxation therapy does not improve the outcomes of heart disease. In one study, patients were given an advice and relaxation audiotape 24 hours after being admitted to the hospital. Researchers noted a reduction in the number of misconceptions about heart disease, but no benefits on measured health-related outcomes.Avoid with psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia or psychosis. Jacobson relaxation (flexing specific muscles, holding that position, and then relaxing the muscles) should be used cautiously with illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or musculoskeletal injury. Relaxation therapy is not recommended as the sole treatment approach for potentially serious medical conditions, and it should not delay the time to diagnosis or treatment with more proven techniques.Natural Standard Monograph, Copyright © 2008 (www.naturalstandard.com).
