5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) and Insomnia Overview

5-HTP is the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is obtained commercially from the seeds of the plant Griffonia simplicifolia. Although many naturopathic regimens for sleep include 5-HTP, there is insufficient evidence in its use for sleep disorders. Additional studies are needed before a conclusion can be drawn. 5-HTP may cause drug interaction with medications such as antidepressants and sleep medicines. 5-HTP is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless otherwise advised by a doctor.    Copyright 2007 Natural Standard, Inc.   Read more
