Classified as an herb, bromelain is a sulfur-containing proteolytic digestive enzyme that is extracted from the stem and the fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). Overall, there have been various studies on the anti-inflammatory actions of bromelain in animal, in vivo, ex vivo, and human clinical trials; results are promising. The majority of clinical studies have shown a positive effect with bromelain in the treatment of inflammation with minimal adverse events. Bromelain may affect individuals with bleeding disorders or those on medications that decrease clotting, such as aspirin or warfarin (Coumadin). Copyright 2007 Natural Standard, Inc. Read more
