Arginine and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Overview

Arginine: Arginine or L-arginine is considered a semi-essential amino acid, because although it is normally synthesized in sufficient amounts by the body, supplementation is sometimes required. There is initial evidence from several studies that arginine when taken orally or by injection improves exercise tolerance and blood flow in arteries of the heart. Benefits have been reported in some patients with coronary artery disease and angina. Studies of arginine in patients with chronic heart failure have shown mixed results. Some studies report improved exercise tolerance. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings before a firm conclusion can be drawn. L-arginine is generally considered safe in recommended dosages.Natural Standard Monograph, Copyright © 2008 (www.naturalstandard.com). Commercial distribution prohibited.
