Bromelain: Bromelain is a sulfur-containing proteolytic digestive enzyme that is extracted from the stem and the fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). There is not enough information to recommend for or against the use of bromelain in the treatment of cancer, either alone or in addition to other therapies. One small study found that a bromelain supplement decreased tumor size in 12 breast cancer patients. Patients took the supplements for months to years. Bromelain may increase bleeding in sensitive individuals, such as those taking blood thinning medications such as warfarin (Coumadin ®).Natural Standard Monograph, Copyright © 2008 (www.naturalstandard.com).
