Bromelain and Osteoarthritis Overview

Bromelain: Bromelain is an herb that contains a digestive enzyme that comes from the stem and the fruit of the pineapple plant (Ananus comosus). When taken with meals, bromelain may aid in the digestion of proteins. When taken on an empty stomach it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Results of a study found a combination supplement called ERC (enzyme-rutosid combination -rutosid, bromelain, trypsin) may be considered as an effective and safe alternative to prescription anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as diclofenac, in the treatment of painful episodes of OA of the knee. Further well-designed clinical trials of bromelain alone are needed to confirm these resultsAvoid bromelain if allergic to bromelain, pineapple, honeybee, venom, latex, birth pollen, carrots, celery, fennel, cypress pollen, grass pollen, papain, rye flour, wheat flour, or other members of the Bromeliaceae family.   Read more
