Probiotics and Rectal Cancer Overview

Probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria (sometimes referred to as "friendly germs") that help maintain the health of the intestinal tract and aid in digestion. They also help keep potentially harmful organisms in the gut (harmful bacteria and yeasts) under control. Most probiotics come from food sources, especially cultured milk products. There is recent evidence that supplementation with Lactobacillus casei may help reduce the recurrence of colorectal tumors in patients who have previously undergone surgery for colorectal cancer. Long-term consumption of probiotics is considered safe and well tolerated. Diarrhea may be a sign of too many probiotics.Natural Standard Monograph, Copyright © 2008 (www.naturalstandard.com).
