Listening to Music Can Reduce Chronic Pain and Depression by up to 25 Percent

Just listening to music can reduce depression by up to 25 per cent and chronic pain by up to 21 per cent, according to a research paper published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing. People seemed to be more in control of their pain (physical or psychological) if they listened to music for one hour everyday for a week.

According to a study published in the Journal of Music Therapy, patients who received pre and post-operative music therapy experienced reduced anxiety and stress, had a more positive perception of hospitalization, and were more relaxed than those who did not receive music therapy.  The study focused on individuals undergoing surgical procedures for the brain.
