Borage (Borago officinalis) is an herb native to Syria that has spread throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean. Borage flowers and leaves may be eaten and borage seeds are often pressed to produce oil that is very high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA has known anti-inflammatory effects that may make it beneficial in treating rheumatoid arthritis. A few human studies have generally found positive results and no side effects were reported. However, more research is needed to determine the optimal dose and administration. Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to borage, its constituents, or members of the Boraginaceae family. Avoid with a weakened immune system. Use cautiously with bleeding disorders, epilepsy, or if taking drugs used to treat these disorders. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
