The practice of acupuncture originated in China 5,000 years ago. Today, acupuncture is widely used throughout the world and is one of the main pillars of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Evidence is inconsistent regarding the effects of acupuncture in back pain. The research on acupuncture for neck pain and cervical myofascial pain, also shows mixed results. Also, early study does not show that laser acupuncture is any more effective than sham laser acupuncture when used in combination with drugs and other mobilization therapies. There has been limited research on acupuncture for cancer pain, and the research that was done was shown to have mixed results. More studies are needed to determine the potential benefits of acupuncture in pain management.
