The practice of acupuncture originated in China 5,000 years ago. Today, acupuncture is widely used throughout the world and is one of the main pillars of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Acupuncture involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation. The placement of these needles by a acupuncturist manipulates the body's energy or "qi" so healing can take place. There is good evidence from one well-designed systematic review of randomized controlled trials in support of the use of acupuncture for pain or discomfort associated with gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic procedures. Acupuncture may also be effective for dental pain. Further human research is needed.
