A clinical study published in the journal Pain indicates that acupuncture can effectively treat repetitive strain injury. Researchers from University of Heidelberg, Germany, conducted a randomized single-blind clinical trial to assess the efficacy of acupuncture in treating chronic shoulder pain and to review if the improvement in the patient is due to psychological factors alone. Fifty two athletes with rotator cuff tendonitis were treated using acupuncture needle as control. The results showed that needling - an important part of acupuncture procedure – was significantly effective in the treatment of chronic pain in the sportsmen.
