According to a clinical study published in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, the ayurvedic herb, Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), was found to be significantly effective in reducing weight in obese people. The researchers from the Swami Prakashananda Ayurveda Research Centre, India, conducted an open, comparative trial over a period of 30 days in 56 adults weighing more than 90 kg. The participants were randomly divided into a control group which included brisk walking and diet control, and a guggulu group which in addition to the above factors were also given guggulu. The scientists however felt the need of a larger placebo controlled study.
