L-arginine, or arginine, is a semi-essential amino acid needed by the body. Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide, which causes blood vessel relaxation (vasodilation). Preliminary studies suggest that adding arginine to ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) therapy may decrease migraine headache pain. Arginine is generally regarded as safe in recommended dosages.
