According to a double blind, controlled, clinical trial published by Dr. Tori Hudson, N.D., in 1997, a herbal combination of licorice root, motherwort, dong quai, burdock root and wild yam root may help in the treatment of menstrual irregularities.

In this trial, seventy-one percent of the participants reported a reduction in symptoms and irregularities.

The two authors are naturopaths and not practitioners of Chinese medicine. There are many hundreds of well-designed studies on the use of specific herbs and formulas for treatment of menstrual irregularities. It is unnecessary for practitioners in other disciplines to reaffirm data already available from China, South Korea, Japan, Europe, and Australia. The beauty of Chinese medicine is that it can be modified to meet the needs of individual patients. Western studies designed by non-practitioners often overlook this fact and, as a result, drive linear medicine approaches within systems that are not linear - like Chinese medicine.
