According to a single blind, placebo controlled study, garlic tablet was found to be significantly beneficial in treating hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol). The trial was conducted in the cardiology department of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran, to study the effect of garlic on the lipid profile of 150 hyperlipidemic patients. It was found that garlic had a favorable effect on the total cholesterol level (12.1 per cent reduction), 17.3 per cent reduction in LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol), and 15.7 per cent increase in HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol).
