The seed extract of Aesculus hippocastanum (commonly known as horse chestnut or Spanish chestnut) has been used for centuries to treat hemorrhoids. The active ingredient in the horse chestnut is aescin. The seed extract contains 16-20 per cent of aescin. According to NCCAM, the seed extract of horse chestnut is beneficial in treating chronic venous insufficiency. Since hemorrhoid is similar to this condition, this treatment may benefit hemorrhoids too, though there is not enough evidence to suggest this.
