A double-blind, clinical trial conducted in Germany to evaluate the effectiveness of Butcher’s broom extract (Ruscus aculeatus) in treating chronic venous insufficiency in 166 women revealed that leg swelling decreased significantly in this group as compared to the placebo group. Though there is no strong evidence of butcher’s broom being effective for hemorrhoids, it is suggested that butcher’s broom used in the form of an ointment or a suppository is beneficial.  Butcher’s broom is widely used in traditional folk medicine and homeopathy for treating hemorrhoids and chronic venous insufficiency.
