The British Journal of Sports Medicine reports that the traditional Chinese martial art, Tai Chi, improves the immune system and reduces blood sugar levels as two separate studies in Australia and Taiwan have indicated.

Thirty diabetic and thirty healthy people participated in three hour long sessions of Tai Chi per week and over 12 weeks.  Over this time, the diabetics exhibited both a drop in blood sugar levels and an improvement in immunity.

In another pilot study, researchers at the University of Queensland found that a combination of Tai Chi and Qi gong created great benefits for individuals with diabetes. In this study, participants found that their blood sugar levels were improved, they lost weight, their sleep patterns improved and they felt increased energy when doing these exercises. The study took place over a 3 month period. More clinical trials are underway to determine the veracity of these findings.
