Background
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to two lung diseases, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
- COPD is characterized by a restriction of airflow to the lungs which interferes with normal breathing.
- COPD does not include other obstructive diseases such as asthma.
Causes
There are many different causes for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These include: - Chemical exposure
- Dust exposure
- Air pollution
- Smoking
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of COPD include: - Cough
- Sputum (mucus) production
- Shortness of breath, especially with exercise
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
