Inflammation of the main air passages leading to the lungs is called bronchitis. Bronchitis can be Acute or Chronic.
Acute bronchitis is caused by the virus which causes cold and cough. It affects the nose, sinuses, throat, and then the lungs. Sometimes there is a secondary infection caused by the bacteria.

Chronic bronchitis is a condition wherein the inflammation and the thickening of the lining of the bronchial tubes become permanent. Chronic bronchitis is also known as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and may lead to asthma.

Infants, young children, elderly people, smokers, and people with heart or lung disease are at high risk of developing acute bronchitis.
