BPH is the medical condition where the prostate gland becomes enlarged when a man ages. The growth of the prostate gland occurs in two spurts. One is during puberty and the other usually after the age of 50. It is during the latter stage that the growth proves troublesome because the old cells produced by the gland doesn't die like they used to, while the new cells still continue to be produced. This causes a thickening of the gland creating urinary problems. Benign signifies that the enlargement is not cancerous. |
