Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract seems to be as effective as Tamsulosin (TAM – alpha blocker) in the treatment of benign prostrate hyperplasia (BPH). A research study published in the International Urology Nephrology journal indicates that both treatments are effective alone and the combined therapy of Serenoa extract and TAM does not provide any extra benefits. The study also suggests that saw palmetto extract is a well-tolerated agent, thus it can be used in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH.
