According to German researchers, willow bark may have a moderate analgesic effect and also may be well tolerated in patients with osteoarthritis. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial, seventy-eight patients with osteoarthritis, divided equally into the willow bark group and the placebo group, were treated for pain, stiffness, and physical function. In the study, willow bark extract, in a dose corresponding to 240 mg/day of salicin, was compared with the placebo over a two week period. The results showed a significant improvement in those being treated with willow bark.
