I am not aware of hypnotherapy being counter-indicated for depression. It can in fact be very beneficial in improving the state of mind and general happiness of an individual. There are however legal issues with stepping out of the accepted range of treatment for hypnotherapy. Basically the hypnotist would be stepping on the toes of psychologists and psychiatrists who have admittedly spent many long years learning how to understand the brain from a conscious point of view.
While I like Charles answer, there is one bit he left out. If your depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, I'm not aware of any way in which hypnosis can help with that.
I agree with Charles. Hypnosis can help improve the state of one's mind. And IO agree with the above writer in that true depression often involves a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, there are options for treating most cases depression that do not involve medication, depending on the severity.
One psychotherapy technique that is often very effective for depression is hypnoanalysis. Hypnoanalysis combines hypnosis and psychotherapy and is practiced by psychologists, MD's as well as a variety of other psychotherapy disciplines. In fact, hypnosis speeds the process, often making the process more rapid than traditional talk forms of psychotherapy.
