What is short term or brief psychotherapy?

Answeradd
Brief psychotherapy and short term psychotherapy, although technically somewhat different refer to psychological treatment that is time limited and is more focal in nature. While more traditional treatments tend to be "open ended," i.e. without a defined termination plan, time limited treatment is performed with a solution or goal that is agreed upon by client and mental health professional. The nature of the treatment is such that its purpose is to attain manageable goals in a limited amount of time. While there is no definite standard for time-limited treatment, it tends to range between seven and thirty sessions. Examples of the reasons for implementing time limits include financial limitations, life circumstances that preclude ongoing treatment, such as a move, or goals that require a limit, such as anxiety about an upcoming job interview. More severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder or major depressive disorders tend to require more extended treatment plans, but are not necessarily contraindications to time limited treatment.
