Well its important for the recipient / client to know that they are participating in their own healing and the Reiki practitioner is just an aid to assist. So the person has to be willing to heal. Reiki is a pure concentrated form of universal life force energy, the practiotioner is just a channelor for this energy, allowing themselves to be open for the energy to flow through them into the recipient. Through this process the Reiki practitioner may also have a hightened level of intuition or phsycic abilities which can also asist in the recipients healing as important messages may come through the practitioner. Reiki is gentle and relaxing, many feel uplifted and grounded after a treatment.

The most important characteristic of Reiki healing techniques is that Reiki heals on four levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. When introduced to the body, reiki gives every cell the opportunity to heal, harmonize and balance down to its DNA level. Thus, the body is given opportunity to return to its anatomically perfect state of balance. Ki being very much akin to Qigong (or ch'i kung) refers to a wide variety of traditional “cultivation” practices that involve methods of accumulating, circulating, and working with Qi or energy within the body. Medical qigong treatment has been officially recognized as a standard medical technique in Chinese hospitals since 1989 and now Reiki is being utilized and recognized in may United States hospitals.

Reiki treatments do not require the practitioner or the recipient to take any deliberate action for the Reiki energy to flow. This leaves them free to notice other things.
The practitioner is free to notice the ebb and flow of the energy, as well as the intuitive thoughts that come up naturally, and use them to benefit the recipient.
The recipient is free to notice everything that happens during the session: changes of any kind at all in sensations, emotions etc.
It is important to avoid focusing on the problem during the session because it limits the ability to notice what is actually happening. Reiki tends to effect many things that are related to the problem and it is very beneficial to notice any and all such changes, because beneficial changes that you notice are much more likely to stay with you.

Jennifer, Reiki as universal energy will 'go to' the areas where it is most needed. I like to refer to it as a practice which relaxes the body, energizes the mind and balances energy. 'Healing' can be taken in many ways and litigation can be taken if it is promoted as a method of healing or if promises to heal are made.
