Find a modality, such as Tai Chi Chuan, Yoga, Biofeedback ... that you feel comfortable with and that you can get a good teacher of, and bring that into your life.

Reiki is one of the best stress busters around. You might also try some breathing medition; it doesn't have to be elaborate or complicated. Simply meditating on the breath for a few minutes each day will help.

Many Essential oils help to relieve stress. Young Living's lavender and peace and calming are the best!

Hypnotherapy helps with stress wonderfully. Hypnosis can remind your body that it knows exactly how to reduce stress, relax and heal from any illness stress maybe causing you. It's amazing how powerful your sub-conscience mind can be if you just remind it that it knows what to do: it can remain clam is stressful situations, it knows how to breath slowly and easily, it knows how to slow down the thoughts, release anger, etc. Check you area for a hypnotherapist and give them a call TODAY! Theres no need to suffer any longer..

Hi Donna

I have reservations as to the mindset ('fix me') that's needed for Hypnosis or NLP or any other system that takes an external agent (Valium ;-}) to work, and it's applicability to stress.

IMO, the first step in stress release is the realization that one can do something about the stressor. Empowering self is the key, and the technique is secondary.

So, have I had exposure to hypnosis, NLP, Alexander Tech. .. yep, did they help? yes, and yet I dumped each and every one of these 'fix me' life anecdotes for owning my life and doing something about it.

The best technique for stress reduction depends on the cause of the stress. In fact, sometimes stress reduction is very simple:
1. Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night - a regular sleep schedule that you do not vary works best. Our brains just work best with enough sleep. During sleep the natural chemicals in our brain that help us cope are recharged. If you find you are tired a lot and sleep deprived, stress will be more difficult to deal with. Most Americans get 6 or less hours of sleep per night. Recent studies have shown that sleep deprivation can mimic mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression. It has also been linked to obesity.
2. Get daily exercise - here whatever you enjoy works best - walking, yoga, kick boxing, it really doesn't matter that much, because they can all work. The point is one way our bodies get rid of mental stress is to be physically active. And if you do something you enjoy, you get a double benefit.
3. Get support from friends and family. Having caring relationships improves our immune system, reduces stress and talking to others can help us have a sense of perspective.
4. Eat regular, small, healthy meals, avoid refined sugars that send your blood sugar on big swings - this increases the feeling of stress.
5. Meditation and self-hypnosis provide the mind and brain with a mini-vacation. Techniques can be as simple as taking deep breaths and focusing your mind on a few uplifting words or vividly imagining being someplace beautiful, safe, and relaxing. People who practice regularly (every day) eventually have changes in the brain that make it easier to deal with situations which in the past were difficult to manage.

If you are overwhelmed with stress, or these simple life-style choices either aren't enough or seem difficult to accomplish, you may need more. If you are able to decide you need to take control of your life and can do that, fantastic. Do it. Not everyone who feels stress needs professional help. Some people really do need more support. Here again, it depends on what makes the most sense to you. For some people talking to clergy helps. Others need counseling or psychotherapy.

If you need counseling or psychotherapy, be a good consumer. Find out the person's credentials - they need a minimum of a Master's degree is psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy. M.Div., LCPC, PhD, MSW are all degrees that include counseling. And they need to be licensed by the state they practice in. These are minimum requirements. Your doctor or someone you know may have a good referral for you. Beyond that, spend some time talking to the person about what they specialize in and find out if you feel comfortable talking with them.

There are forms of psychotherapy that work better than others. For example, a process of psychotherapy that uses hypnosis called hypnoanalysis can rapidly identify and resolve the root cause of most stress and help you quickly feel better, think more clearly and make desired behavior changes. Traditional psychotherapy can often take 2-10 years or more to achieve lasting changes, exceeding most insurance allowance. Hypnoanalysis can take as little as 10-30 sessions depending on the cause of the problem. In the process of hypnoanalysis, most practitioners will teach you self-hypnosis so you can use the technique for stress reduction on your own.
