According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (which is an ancient summation on the path of yoga) yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations in the conciousness. This means we are training the mind into silence. The physical postures found in Hatha Yoga are a tool to prepare the physical body for meditation. The side effects are usually increased strength, flexibility and a feeling of well-being. Check out the work of BKS Iyengar and try a class so you can see for yourself.
