Q

Does hypnotherapy really work?

Absolutely! Your mind controls your body. If we were to remind or ask your sub-conscience mind to produce more comfort it will comply. It will encrease the endorphin's that make your pain less. While your in a relaxed state the mind is highly suggestible. When your in pain the muscles tense up, squeezing the oxygen out of them. When your relaxed, the muscles get the oxygen they need and feeling more comfortable as a result. Unfortunately I don't have the time to write a lengthy response but I do hope you will research this further seeing the proof is undeniable. -Donna Jean Rains, CCHt: Midtown Hypnotherapy, Sacramento, Ca

Hypnotherapy can be very effective - but it is important to know that there are different techniques that fall under the term hypnotherapy.

Hypnosis is simply a concentrated mind - an experience we normally go in and out of all the time - it's similar to day dreaming, or the experience we have right before falling asleep. Therapeutic hypnosis combines this state of a concentrated mind with relaxation. Everything Ms. Rains said is right about what happens in the body when we experience therapeutic hypnosis - whether in self-hypnosis or hypnosis experienced with a hypnotherapist.

Hypnotherapy adds direct suggestions to help you meet your goal. You can learn self-hypnosis and give yourself suggestions or have a hypnotherpaist give you well structured suggestions to help you meet your goals. This works well for stress reduction, performance improvement, pain relief, some cases of stop smoking and weight loss, nail biting and other simple habits.

For more complex problems such as anxiety, panic, phobias, depression, sexual disorders, relationship issues, self-esteem, and more, sometimes a more in depth process is needed. There is a part of the brain that pairs sensory stimulus with physiological reactions. When this part of the brain has been programmed to trigger negative reactions, that needs to be resolved, and hypnoanalysis can be very helpful.

It works because of the way the brain is structured. In traditional talk therapy, the cerebral cortex is accessed - the conscious mind. This part of the brain suppresses the part of the brain that triggers automatic reactions of anxiety, phobias, and more. Hypnosis lets the conscious mind (cerebral cortex) go in the background so you have access to the part of the brain where these things are programmed (to use a computer metaphor). When the events that programmed that part of the brain are resolved, the symptom can be relieved.
