The answer is a little more complicated than a flat "no".
Again, it depends on a number of factors such as needle size and technique of insertion.
In my experience, the patients who most often complain of pain with acupuncture are ones who have been treated by practitioners of other medicines who have taken a minimal amount of training in acupuncture (a couple of hundred hours) as opposed to a Doctor of Oriental Medicine who has studied for several years.
Needles can be inserted with or without the use of guide tubes. Although a skilled practitioner can tubelessly insert needles almost painlessly, the tube does, in fact, reduce the sensation greatly.
Besides the needles being incredibly small, the other reason that there is little sensation is because the tip of the needle is round and solid allowing it to separate the tissue instead of slicing it like a Western needle does.
So, essentially Nathan is right. In correct hands there is very little discomfort.
