Q

Chronic back pain due to slipped disks?

I have multiple slipped disks in my back and chronic, debilitating back pain. Are there any alternative treatments that might help me? (I'm not even a candidate for surgery).

I would consider acupuncture and osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) as other remedies that might help. There are lots of OMM techniques (Counterstrain, Muscle Energy, High Velocity Low Amplitude, etc.) and you can be evaluated by a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) who has extra training in these approaches.

FYI: Imaging studies don't always correlate with one's pain and vice versa. Some patients have fairly benign appearing imaging studies, but still complain of lots of pain. Others have imaging studies showing lots of abnormalities, and yet don't have much pain.

If the causes are postural, then Yoga or Tai Chi Chuan can rectify posture, and resolve the issue.

Osteopaths are often effective but interestingly so too is the nutrient CO-Q10. Taken at higher dosages, say around 300 mgs or more can have a remarkable curative effect. I take the dry powder capsules which can be found at www.iherb.com. I sometimes wonder if back pain is the body's signal that it is lacking in some nutrient.
