I developed an Irritable Bowel Disorder after a prolonger period of anxiety, tension and from there depression.

When we are in these states we are in a flight or fight response which produces adrenalin (a caustic substance) in the blood stream and moves blood away from the internal organs to the extremities for the 'run'. In a prolonged state this does have an extreme effect on the digestive system as I found out with a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis. It was through stress management techniques and diet that I have been able to manage this disorder.

Depression and anxiety can definitely contribute to GI distress. Unfortunately, GI distress itself can exacerbate depression and anxiety through interfering with key nutrient absorption.

The adrenal glands (highly active in stress or anxiety) have a huge demand for B vitamins. Depression can also be linked to low B vitamin states because various B vitamins are required for the production of the neurotransmitters which are often at low levels in depression.

I always make sure that my patients with depression or anxiety are on a professional grade multiple vitamin--especially if they also have concomitant GI distress.
